41 Horror Films In 31 Days

Below, you'll find the list I've comprised for this year's Halloween viewing, which I'll be starting at the beginning of next month. Last year, I feel that I was deprived of a proper Halloween. Reason being, it just came up to fast, I let time slip by. And I didn't get to watch the films that I usually do, the ones that put me in the mood for Halloween. Aside from watching John Carpenter's "Halloween", which I watch every year on the actual holiday, I can't remember any other flicks that I watched.

I used to run marathons, where I'd almost clear my entire movie collection!

This year, I can't watch as many as I'd like because of life but, I've got a solid list ahead of me that I mapped out. I'm not watching any Freddy's or Jason's, or Chucky's because, I've just gone through all of them in the past three or four months. So, I've sacrificed watching the common classics for the sake of visiting pictures that I haven't seen in a while. Of course, there's still some all-time greats that I had to keep on the list, and wouldn't replace.

On a side note, I'll openly admit that if possible, I'll exceed this list. I'd like to watch "Maniac Cop" for the fifth or sixth time. I'll also try and squeeze the "Evil Dead" remake in, and if possible, any or all of the original trilogy.

If you're a genre buff, you'll know most of the films, if not all of them on my list. If you aren't familiar with any, and would like to be, all of the motion pictures listed are linked to their IMDb page.

  1. An American Werewolf in London (1981)

  1. Fantastic list! This is my favorite time of the year because I can actually get people to watch these movies with me, so I'll be doing the same. I'll be posting my list in a couple days as well, and it looks like we'll be watching many of the same flicks. Cheers man!

  2. Awesome! I will be on the lookout for your list! I also will have people to watch these films with, haha. I'm used to watching them alone but, when you have others around it makes for a funner experience. I've got no one to watch The Exorcist with me, though. Everyone I know won't touch that film. Guess that comes with growing up in a religious household. :)

    1. Where do you find the time? lol I've done thirty-one movies in October for the last few years, but I'm afraid - owing to having a new baby in the house - that won't be possible this year.

I've collected a prodigious heap of Hammer movies, though, so I've got the raw materials. Even better - I've not seen most of them before. That's a great thing about Hammer. You can watch shitloads of them and still have shitloads more to watch. They cover a wide spectrum, too - vampires, mad scientists, werewolves, zombies, psychopathic killers, dinosaurs, mummies . . . I just watched The Nanny (1965) with Bette Davis yesterday just to "warm up".

    2. I love me some Hammer films! That's not a bad idea at all to do them! "The Nanny" isn't one that I've seen actually.

As to where I find the time, I don't! It's one of those things where you can't wait for it to come to you, you just have to make it work. Usually I'll come home and bang out at least one film before bed. However, I don't sleep to good, so I'm always up. So, when this happens I throw on a film until I pass out. Then pick it up the next day with a new one.

Congrats on the new baby! I definitely know that when the day comes and I have children, my time will be minimized but, until then, I'm living it up. Or, the baby can watch with me! They're too young to remember anyway right? LOL

  3. Man, that's an herculean undertaking, fair play to you for getting through that amount. I used to have the time for 10 films a week; no I'm lucky to see 3 or 4. Will probably do a horror special for the fortnight around Halloween, though. There is one or two here that I ain't heard of, will check them out.

    1. Awesome! A lot of horror fans are opinionated, and I try to avoid that. I think us horror fans should stick together. We like the same shit, have the same agenda. Spreading the word of films some haven't seen before to other horror fans is awesome. I find ones all the time.

I know one day I'll be in your shoes with only 3 or 4 films a week, life tends it get in the way. But, while I can, I'm living it up!

    2. Hi Grimm
Will write more later, I'm at work, but I wanted to tell you my daughter, 19, doesn't want to watch Ginger Snaps 2, cause she liked 1 so much. She doesn't want to be disappointed. hah!

  4. There is generally never a nicer bunch than horror fans. We tend to be quite forgiving, too, especially towards things like originality and budgets. If I want some good recommendations on low budget horror, I go to the blogs where folks are passionate about it.

For Halloween itself, I usually end up going with pre-70's films, as my wife is a complete wimp on horror. YOu can't beat gothic atmosphere to get you in the mood, though.

    1. Damn straight! You're right, we are quite forgiving. Bloggers are the real horror fans. Blogs are better than websites to me.

  5. Quite the undertaking! (Pun intended.) I'm proud to say I'm aware of everything on this list, and have seen most of them, with one exception-- Hocus Pocus. When I looked it up, I instantly knew why. It has Bette Midler. I can't stand Bette Midler! :)

  6. Fantastic. Is the plan to do some written commentary to go alongside? I guess all you'd need is a few words here and there; see if they all hold up.

Ha, a few comments as to your mental wellbeing might be fun as well, I tend to start going doolally after a heavy horror session.

Lots on that list I have seen, lots I haven't and you've inspired me to watch some (even though they don't have zombies in!) over the same period.

Good luck, hope someone has the straight jacket ready.

    1. Yeah, I'm sure on Twitter I'll be doing some live tweeting to go along with the films when I start them.

As far as the straight jacket goes, I just may need one. Although, I hardly ever go into a horror film coma. Last time that happened, I watched Inside, I Spit on your Grave, A Serbian Film and August Underground's Mordum. It was to much at once, and I went on a 2 week horror sabbatical LOL. I don't think that'll happen this time.
