FILM REVIEW: Big Trouble in Little China (1986)

Director John Carpenter has done five films with actor Kurt Russel; Elvis (TV Movie), Escape from New York, The Thing, Escape From L.A., and Big Trouble in Little China. The thing is, I never got around to seeing Big Trouble in Little China until just a few days ago, and I'm an instant fan. This movie and I have crossed paths several times, it was one of those movies that just kept slipping by. I mean, I love John Carpenter, he'll probably always be my favorite director in the Horror genre. And, I've got no beef with Kurt Russell either, he's in some good movies with and without Carpenter behind the camera. But as far as I know, the work Carpenter and Russell do together is without qualms. The itch to finally watch Big Trouble in Little China came from a friend of mine who was posting pictures of his Blu-ray on Facebook. That, (coupled along with the memories that came back to me of several friends telling me I need to see it) really put a boot in my ass. When I sat down to watch it, it was about 9 pm and I was all alone, so I gave it my undivided attention. Right away I could see that it wasn't at all what I was expecting. No one ever told me what the hell the movie was about, so I was going off of the small synopsis on the back cover. But, I had a gut feeling that I was going to see the appeal in it. John Carpenter, Russell, the crew and studio all caught hell for this movie, slurs of stereotyping and racism from the Chinese began to make their rounds, but as Carpenter and Russell pointed out in the DVD commentary, the Caucasian guy (and star) in the film is the jackass who's clumsy and always messing up. So there's no truth behind the rumored racism behind this flick. Some truth though, is it only had $3 Million for advertising, and on top of that, the studio didn't know how to market it because Carpenter didn't make the movie the studio expected. So, Big Trouble in Little China has been somewhat of a sleeper, gaining its crowd and popularity after the point of its release. So, I guess better late than never for me, right?

A HAUNTED HOUSE 2 falls short on the laughs

RATED- R
RUN TIME- 86 Mins
WRITER(S)- Marlon Wayans and Rick Alvarez
STARRING- Marlon Wayans, Jaime Pressly, and Cedric the Entertainer
DIRECTOR- Michael Tiddes

Synopsis taken from IMDb
Having exorcised the demons of his ex, Malcolm is starting fresh with his new girlfriend and her two children. After moving into their dream home, however, Malcolm is once again plagued by bizarre paranormal events.

This second installment in the "A Haunted House" series starts immediately where the first film left off, and packs in the laughs. Within the first five minutes I laughed several times, it opens strong and goofy. I've always been a sucker for stupid humor, and I've liked the Wayans brothers for a long time. Their movies are usually right up my alley.

Once Malcolm (Marlon Wayans) and his new girlfriend move into their home, it's simple things like ad libbed dialogue that gets the giggles out of you. Such things as referring to his new dog as Shiloh the sequel (since his first dog, Shiloh, died in the first film) got laughs from me. It's intentionally dumb, and that stuff usually gets reactions out of me.

Once Malcolm and his girlfriend Meg (Jaime Pressly) discover a weird doll's in their house by the name of Abigail, things get really out of hand, leading to an elaborate but funny sex scene between Malcolm and the doll. Once again, Marlon Wayans pushes the ratings barrier with raunchy and downright explicit humor.

Then if that isn't enough, the doll becomes obsessed with Malcolm, and sends him a friend request on Facebook. Again, the stupid things like this are what I find to be ridiculously funny. There's another scene that takes a page from "The Conjuring" where the infamous wardrobe scene is imitated. This also resulted in my laughter.

Malcolm's ex, Kisha shows up and disrupts the new life he's build since splitting on her in the beginning of the film. Once Malcolm has to explain his relationship with Kisha to his new girl Meg, we see some more raunchy humor and a hilarious head spin referring to "The Exorcist". And this is where things go from bad to worse for Malcolm, and leads to an exorcism scene.

Basically, although the first and second act are amusing and downright funny at parts, it's really just more of the same. It's just a lot of parodying cliches along with other films such as "The Conjuring", "The Possession", "Sinister", "Paranormal Activity", and the "Evil Dead" reboot. There's also an abundance of racist jokes that are stereotypical, and just aren't that funny. The movie almost becomes a mockery of itself for the third act.

At about 50 minutes into the film, I knew that I liked the previous movie more. Although I was laughing here and there, I wasn't laughing as hard as I had in the first film. And I wasn't enjoying myself as much. I even found myself getting bored and checking my cell phone, increasingly losing interest in the film as it neared its end.

This movie just seems so recklessly put together and sloppy. A lot of scenes drag on far too long and rely on ad libbed babbling to be funny, and it's just senseless and a waste of time. There's usually a lot of deleted and altered scenes in spoof films like this, so I'm sure there's a lot of stuff that didn't make it into the movie. But it makes me wonder if they really couldn't have used some of that footage instead of relying on so much randomness. What a waste.

Not even bringing back Cedric the Entertainer and adding Gabriel Iglesias is enough to save this flick, which is a shame. I was one of the few people who backed the previous film up, and argued its humor. But there's nothing to defend on this one. I am completely let down. I can only hope that if there's a third film, that it rebounds with a big win. Otherwise, this series is about as useless as the "Paranormal Activity" films. I've seen a lot worse, but I expected a lot better.

THIS IS THE END is really funny

RATED- R
RUN TIME- 107 MINS
WRITER(S)- SETH ROGAN AND EVAN GOLDBERG
STARRING- JAMES FRANCO, JONAH HILL, AND SETH ROGAN
DIRECTOR- EVAN GOLDBERG AND SETH ROGAN

Synopsis taken from IMDb
While attending a party and James Franco's house, Seth Rogan, Jay Baruchel and many other celebrities are are faced with the apocalypse.

While everyone in this flick has been in some things not worth a second viewing, they've all also been in some really good pictures. So, I was excited going into this one. The whole concept is just ridiculous enough to pull me in. And, the best thing about it, for me, is that everyone plays themselves. Even if they are exaggerated versions of who they are, it still works.

First of all, it takes a little long to get interesting. For the majority of the beginning, we just see Seth Rogan and Jay Baruchel hanging out, and catching up. While this doesn't really benefit the movie, it does help build story between them that blossoms towards the end. Jay doesn't like the idea of going to Franco's house, because he doesn't feel that he fits in, and isn't fond of any of Rogan's friends. With a little persuasion, Jay tags along.

Once they arrive at Franco's home is when things start to get funny, and we get away from the serious drama. Though the laughs are there, to me, it still drags on a bit too much. Until the apocalypse happens, all there really is to laugh at, is how everyone acts and makes asses of themselves. The party definitely seems like a good time, even if Jay doesn't enjoy it.

When the end of the world begins, the film goes from funny to laugh-out-loud hilarious. They're none equipped for such a catastrophe, and they handle things in such an immature and stupid way that you can't help but crack up. I am actually very surprised by how religious this movie is, and how true it stays to the Bible in terms of how the apocalypse goes down. It manages to not be overwhelmingly righteous but, the message is there, clear as day! I like that they went this route, because in today's society it's not really cool to believe in God anymore. So, I appreciate that they keep it old school, and by the book (pun intended).

Pretty much, all of the chosen people on earth are taken to heaven through beams of light that looks like something from a UFO, and it's easy to believe at first that it's aliens abducting people. One may even think that's the direction it's going but, once the religious aspect is brought into the picture, you see that all the sinners, including everyone at Franco's party, are "left behind" to live in hell. But, what do these guys do? They take an abundance of narcotics and party.

Danny McBride is the person I was probably looking forward to the most, and I was kind of let down to see that his character isn't very likable, and even Franco himself doesn't like him. I love the scenes of them arguing with one another for some of the most idiotic things you can think of! Just senseless fun! Michael Cera is actually pretty good in this, and there's an appearance by Channing Tatum that had me going. Funny stuff.

Aside from all that, there's some classic scenes amongst the cast. Such as, the filming of "The Pineapple Express 2"  and "The Exorcism of Jonah Hill". This is the way these guys amuse themselves with what little time they have left on earth. And I'm glad they do, because it sure as hell makes for some quality entertainment.

No, this is not a perfect comedy. The acting isn't brilliant or extraordinary, it never is if you ask me. The story is simple, and didn't take a lot of thought. At least I'd hope that it didn't take a lot of thought for something so basic. On the other hand, this motion picture is well crafted and makes a good time. It's a lot better than some of the other films this cast has been it, bet on that.

Ultimately, the message is not to be a crappy person or in the end, you'll get what you have coming to ya. It's cool to see the guys and girls make fun of the fact that they're in the group of people who aren't good enough for heaven. It's even better to see them make the best of the time they have left, and discover that nothing is stronger than friendship.

In conclusion, I wasn't as impressed as I was hoping to be but, I still like it.

THE WORLD'S END caps off a perfect trilogy

RATED- R
RUN TIME- 109 MINS
WRITER(S)- SIMON PEGG AND EDGAR WRIGHT
STARRING- SIMON PEGG, NICK FROST, AND MARTIN FREEMAN
DIRECTOR- EDGAR WRIGHT

Synopsis taken from IMDb
Five friends reunite in an attempt to top their epic pub crawl from 20 years earlier unwittingly become humankind's only hope for survival.

Years back when I became a fan of 2004's "Shaun of the Dead", I became obsessed. As a matter of fact, a friend of mine has a memory of me watching it seven times in one week. Afterwards, I discovered the British sitcom, "Spaced", which also stars Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. I became an instant fan. Then, "Hot Fuzz" hit in 2007, and again, I was a fan. What I'm getting at is, seeing the conclusion of the Wright, Pegg and Frost trilogy was a must for me.

The first thing that struck me when watching, was that I forgot that it was about robots taking over the world. Seriously, no exaggeration, the characters and their bonds seem so real that I got caught up in their personal stories. And, with the character development going on, the big picture slipped my mind! When the first robot encounter happens, it actually jolted me, because I forgot all about that aspect of the film. Just goes to show ya that all you gotta do is sit these guys down at a pub and let them talk to make a good movie.

It's laugh out loud funny, even though there's tragic and depressing moments. There's always an upbeat to it, giving off a positive and heartfelt vibe, even through the gloomy times. I can recall several times that this movie had me cracking up. And a lot of that not only came from great dialog but also, the action scenes...

Nick Frost owns the screen in the showdown scenes. His character, Andy Knightley, is such a calm and collected character. So, it's a total rush of excitement and humor when he snaps and starts kicking major ass. He and Simon Pegg make an unstoppable team yet again! The action and effects are done in a very comedic way, and it's very original. The whole film is really just genius humor!

The supporting cast was spot on as well. The thing that I enjoy and commend this movie on the most is, the fact that all of the characters are funny and have their moment, not just the leading men.

As the film concludes, it ties up very nicely and leaves you with a smile on your face. Well, it left me with a smile on my face, anyway. It really does end on the right note. This isn't some "Rocky V", where they need to do another film to wash this one out. No, they hit the nail on the head with a proper finale. It doesn't live up to "Shaun of the Dead" but, I like it more than "Hot Fuzz".

As the final installment in their trilogy, there's a lot of underlying messages. Most of which, are about growing up and moving on. This is particularly sad because, I found it to not only be about the characters in the film but, also about Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Edgar Wright in their personal lives. Moving on from the past and letting go. It's dismal to see them go but, they go out in a blaze of glory with this great end to their series.

Nothing stays the same, no matter how hard you try. And nothing lasts forever. But, friendship is worth living for. That's the message this motion picture leaves us with. "The World's End" is a celebration of life.

Parasitic (2012)

RATED- R
RUN TIME- 79 MINS
WRITER(S)- TIM MARTIN
STARRING- JULIE ANNE, CAMILLE BALSAMO AND AMANDA BECK
DIRECTOR- TIM MARTIN

Synopsis taken from IMDb
A group of friends become trapped inside a nightclub with an unseen terror. Unable to escape, one at a time they fall victim to the ravenous, bloodthirsty beast.

Another night of staying up late with insomnia is the reason I watched this film. It was simply the next one in line on my Netflix Queue. And If you've read my last few posts, you know that I'm on a losing streak with Netflix.

So I wasn't expecting anything from this film. I was just hoping that it wouldn't be as bad as the last one I've watched. I believe I saw this film at Redbox, I'm not sure, but I've seen this movie around before somewhere, and I've been eager to try it. That's why it was on my instant queue in the first place. They say never judge a book by its cover, but this one is hard to not wanna watch after you see the cover.

Instantly, I got a feel of the film, what it was going to be like, how it was going to turn out, etc. The reason is, this film is one of those with a very simple and basic story. You can text through it, get up and grab a bite to eat, and use the toilet without pausing it, and still understand the movie completely. There isn't anything to understand, it is what it is. This is literally a film where no one's infected, then people start getting infected, and then there's a conclusion. Nothing special or anything original.

I had my ups and downs with this movie. One minute I was excited to see what would happen, and the other I wasn't. There are things that I certainly do like about this film, but there's also things that I don't. I think being truthful and speaking down the line, that this film is a bad movie. However, it has a lot of entertainment value and quality. It's not so bad that you trash it to your friends, it's one that you invite friends over to watch, so you can laugh and have a good time.

I was upset when the attractive bartender, Val (Bianca Holland), got infected. She wasn't someone I would have minded looking at for the duration of the film. Then I got happy because after becoming infected, Val undresses in the bathroom. So at that point, I was glad that she had gotten infected. It was totally worth not seeing her for a long period after, when she disappeared into the vents.

The acting in this film is pretty damn bad. As a horror fan, we all know how actors in horror get it wrong. Due to this fact, we all have different levels of bad. There's good-bad, bad-but-awesome, etc. This film falls into bad-bad, where it's such bad acting, that when it's unintentionally funny. You're actually laughing at the people instead of with them.

The dialog in this little piece of cinema is really, really bad. Nothing that's said feels natural, it's all forced. There's a lot of idiotic things spoken. None of the characters felt real, so the disconnection you feel for them makes it hard to give a damn if they get infected or not. I really didn't care what happened to any of them.

One thing that really got on my nerves is the fact that all of the men in this movie, aren't men at all. They're little sissy girls. None of the guys want to fight, they're as bad as the girls, and it's embarrassing. Of the handful of guys in the club, none of them show that they have any guts, they just lay there and expect everyone else to help them. Had this been me, I would have been coming up with a plan, not being useless like they were.

As bad as this film is, I can't honestly say that I wouldn't watch it again. That's probably the biggest and only compliment that I can give this movie, because I don't plan on revisiting a lot of what I've watched recently. The parasite at the end was actually really impressive! I really liked the look and design, it was a cross between the Predator and Alien hybrid, mixed with the alien from "The Faculty". I feel that most of the budget went into this creature, and it showed, because the rest of the film suffers.

In conclusion, if you're in the mood for a film that's easy to watch, has some laughs, and doesn't take itself seriously, than this is a film that's worth at least a one time watch. It's not a good movie, but it's a fun one, and that's better than what I can say about some of the other films I've seen as of late.

The Haunted Trailer will have you Laughing Out Loud

RATED- UNRATED
RUN TIME- 90 MINS
WRITER(S)- CHUCK NORFOLK, STEVEN SCOTT NORFOLK AND TIM NORFOLK
STARRING- RON JEREMY, JOE GRISAFFI AND JEREMY JAMES DOUGLAS NORTON
DIRECTOR- CHUCK NORFOLK

Synopsis taken from IMDb
Two goofy hick brothers (Elvis and Aaron), their crazy redneck Momma and sexy sister (Prissy) must exorcise their mobile home of an ancient demon set free to fulfill the 2012 prophecy, with the help of a low rent TV evangelist named Reverend Wiggems, or the world will end. A Raunchy redneck comedy/horror.

I first watched this film last night, at about 3:00 a.m. Seeing as I knew this was going to be funny, I made sure the mood and setting was right. I can honestly tell you that I was laughing 2 minutes in...

The thing about this film, is that it doesn't take itself seriously. If it did, this film would have a whole other effect. However, Chuck Norfolk knew what type of movie he was making. He wasn't aiming for Oscars. This is a true horror-comedy that comes off likes something you'd catch from Full Moon Features. It's very cheesy in a deliberate way, and stacks up the laughter.
I've always been an avid fan of dirty, fart and crap jokes, and this film is full of flatulence and feces.

The fact that Ron Jeremy is in this film cracks me up. I always heard that he's a nice, funny guy, and now I've seen it for myself. Ron Jeremy haunting your house as an Indian...ridiculous...but hilarious! Joe Grisaffi had me laughing the most, his performance as momma was funny as hell. He has so many great lines, but my favorite has got to be "smells like cocoa butter and burnt pine cones."

When Reverend Wiggems comes into the picture, it becomes even more over-the-top than before. His attempt at exorcising the trailer is absurd! I always enjoy a movie that's meant to be pure entertainment. It really is enjoyable from beginning to end, even if you're only interested in the humor aspect of the film. Fans of comedy and or horror, will find something for them in this movie.

The acting is overdone, and can be annoying, but it's totally acceptable because this is that type of movie. Clearly, no one was aiming to steal the show, they were just playing dumb, ignorant red necks and they did a good job. They all have moments that'll cause you to laugh to aloud.

The best part about this film is waiting for Ron Jeremy to appear! I was eagerly awaiting his next appearance, because he always shows up at the best moments and does or says something that will make you smack your head and laugh. There's a dance scene towards the end that I found quite amusing, I laughed hard.

All in all, this is a very enjoyable film. It's got a little something for everybody, and it's good for a lot of laughs. Keep your eyes open for this one when it lands, you really shouldn't miss this one. It's not a perfect movie, but it's a damn entertaining one! Pure entertainment.

Frankenhooker (1990)

"A Terrifying Tale of Sluts & Bolts"

RATED- R
RUN TIME- 85 MINS
WRITER(S)- FRANK HENENLOTTER AND ROBERT MARTIN
STARRING- JAMES LORINZ, JOANNE RITCHIE AND PATTY MULLEN
DIRECTOR- FRANK HENENLOTTER

Synopsis taken from IMDb
A medical student sets out to recreate his decapitated fiance by building her a new body made of Manhattan street hookers.

I first saw this movie just two nights ago and instantly fell in love with it. I've seen it around before and I've heard of it, but I'd never watched it. Now, I'm very glad I did. "Frankenhooker" had all the ingredients to make me a happy man.

I love how although it's very loosely based on Mary Shelly's "Frankenstein" novel, they still throw out little homages. Like the lead character Jeffrey's last name is Franken, and his fiance's last name is Shelly, it's little touches like that that'll make me appreciate this movie. They knew they weren't making an Oscar winning movie, they were making a good, fun horror comedy.

When Jeffrey's fiance Elizabeth gets chopped to pieces by Jeffrey's remote controlled lawnmower I couldn't help but laugh. I knew from the beginning this was going to be a fun watch. The effects are so corny and cheesy, yet they're endearing. This falls right into the category of "Re-Animator" and "Elvira, Mistress of the Dark" with it's humor and entertainment quality. It's not as good as either of the films mentioned, but it's in the same class and one I'd definitely watch again, and with friends.

There's so many funny parts that're so memorable. One of the things that really had me going was the super crack that Jeffrey concocts in order to get the hookers high and in a catatonic state so he can take the limbs from each hooker he wants. He first tests it on a gerbil, and the crack is so potent that the little guy explodes.  Needless to say when the hookers take it the same thing happens to them, which is hysterical.  And Jeffrey doesn't need to surgically cut the hookers' limbs off because their bodies are all over the floor and in pieces. So he can just take what he wants and go.

After using all the limbs he's gotten off of the prostitute, Jeffrey gets to work on making his fiance whole again. But it never works out like they plan it to, does it? Elizabeth comes back and is a horny, greedy hooker. All the parts used to create her from prostitutes caused her to become one. Elizabeth storms the city looking for a good pay day.

The whole movie is enjoyable, even Jeffrey hunting her down to bring her back home. And yes, it does have an expected ridiculous and funny ending that perfectly fits this film.

Believe it or not, there's not any serious or hardcore sex scenes in this movie. It's actually not that type of movie at all, it's just got some nudity but just about every horror film does.

I really liked Elizabeth's look. It's cheap, but fitting and she looked cool. She'd be a very cool Halloween costume, if you've got the body for it. She was the perfect female version of Frankenstein's monster and Patty Mullen was on point playing her.

There's not too much to analyze with this movie. It's pretty straight forward and is what it is. The only thing that there is to say is that this is yet another movie that shows how playing God never works out for anyone. If anything it goes ten times worse than you can even imagine when weighing the consequences out. It's about the abuse of power men would have if we had such an ability to create life and it shows how stupidly we'd waste it. "Frankenhooker" is a black comedy that tells this story in an entertaining and lighthearted way.

I'll be buying this one on DVD or Blu-Ray soon. I must own this. I've got a few people I'm going to turn  onto this movie as well. I know they'll enjoy it as much as I have.

A Haunted House (2013)

"This $*%! ain't paranormal"

RATED- R
RUN TIME- 86 MINS
WRITER(S)- MARLON WAYANS AND RICK ALVAREZ
STARRING- MARLON WAYANS, ESSENCE ATKINS AND MARLENE FORTE
DIRECTOR- MICHAEL TIDDES

Synopsis taken from IMDb
Malcolm and Kisha move into their dream home, but soon learn a demon also resides there. When Kisha becomes possessed, Malcolm-determined to keep his sex life on track- turns to a priest, a psychic and a team of ghost-busters for help.

STORY: Marlon Wayans gives the horror-spoof genre a go on his own in this film, without his brothers Sean and Keenan Ivory Wayans. In this film, like all the other Wayans films, it's laced with jokes with the butt end being racial or potty humor. This film is shot in POV mode with a camcorder, just like in the Paranormal Activity movies. Malcolm (Marlon Wayans) lives on his own in with his dog and maid, Rosa (Marlene Forte) and he decides it'd be a good idea for his girlfriend Kisha (Essence Atkins) to move in with him. Upon her arrival, Malcolm starts to immediately wonder if his friends were right in telling him not to go ahead with the move. Most importantly, he's not getting laid and that sets him off.

Kisha mentions she's been hearing noises and at first Malcolm doesn't believe her, but he becomes convinced. They call upon a Psychic for advisement on what is haunting their house. Chip the Psychic (Nick Swardson) comes to their aid and is more caught up in his crush on Malcolm than the haunting.

Things get even worse when Kisha becomes possessed, and Malcolm calls upon "The Ghost Guys", a team of wannabe ghost hunters and a Priest named Father Williams (Cedric the Entertainer). As they all try and help, they none seem to able to do anything effective. They're in over their heads.

Malcolm and Kisha are terrified of their unwanted visitor

HUMOR/LAUGHS: This movie is laugh out loud funny. The whole theater was in hysterics! This movie didn't let up with the humor and it was pretty funny the whole way through. Cedric the Entertainer was a show stealer as Father Williams, his scenes were cracking me up. He was a good addition to the cast.

SPECIAL FX/STUNTS: The effects in this movie were cheap gag jokes that you could tell didn't cost a lot, but that makes it funnier. The point is to see how they react to the bizarre events going on, that's where the real funny stuff is. There was a lot of cgi used in this movie for some of the gags and other scarier elements of this film but nothing fancy.

OVERALL: If you go into the theater expecting a Christopher Nolan or Francis Coppola film, and judging it on the terms of being a "good movie" than go see something else. The people making this movie knew exactly what they were doing, going of an over-the-top funny movie full of raunchy humor and sterotyping. They aren't concerned with winning an Oscar. Judging this movie on a fair grounds, being that it's a movie meant to entertain you and make you laugh, it's a total blast. I can't wait for it to come out on Blu-ray.

 Synopsis taken from IMDb
Agent J travels in time to M.I.B.'s early days in 1969 to stop an alien from assassinating his friend Agent K and changing history.

STORY: Boris the Animal (Jemaine Clement), an alien known as a Boglodite, is the last of his kind and in 1969, a younger Agent K (Josh Brolin) arrested him. Agent K (left) and Agent J (right) find that they make a great team after all

ACTING: The acting in this movie is really well done and humorous. Will Smith is hysterical at several parts and Josh Brolin even has his moments. Josh Brolin steals the show with his acting, he does a perfect job impersonating Tommy Lee Jones. The acting is well done all around.

SPECIAL EFFECTS: The CG and creature effects are on par with today's standard of technology and it's nothing short of what you'd expect from this movie. The creatures are all goofy looking and have quirky personalities, like they always have. They effects are well played.

OVERALL: This film isn't anything more or less than you'd expect from this series. It fits right in with the other 2 films. It's got it's funny and serious moments and overall it's entertaining and fun, but that's as far as it goes. It's not a great film, or one of the best of 2012, it's just a blast to watch and is enjoyable on all fronts.
