A HAUNTED HOUSE 2 falls short on the laughs

This second installment in the "A Haunted House" series starts immediately where the first film left off, and packs in the laughs. Within the first five minutes I laughed several times, it opens strong and goofy. I've always been a sucker for stupid humor, and I've liked the Wayans brothers for a long time. Their movies are usually right up my alley.

Once Malcolm (Marlon Wayans) and his new girlfriend move into their home, it's simple things like ad libbed dialogue that gets the giggles out of you. Such things as referring to his new dog as Shiloh the sequel (since his first dog, Shiloh, died in the first film) got laughs from me. It's intentionally dumb, and that stuff usually gets reactions out of me.

Once Malcolm and his girlfriend Meg (Jaime Pressly) discover a weird doll's in their house by the name of Abigail, things get really out of hand, leading to an elaborate but funny sex scene between Malcolm and the doll. Once again, Marlon Wayans pushes the ratings barrier with raunchy and downright explicit humor.

Then if that isn't enough, the doll becomes obsessed with Malcolm, and sends him a friend request on Facebook. Again, the stupid things like this are what I find to be ridiculously funny. There's another scene that takes a page from "The Conjuring" where the infamous wardrobe scene is imitated. This also resulted in my laughter.

Malcolm's ex, Kisha shows up and disrupts the new life he's build since splitting on her in the beginning of the film. Once Malcolm has to explain his relationship with Kisha to his new girl Meg, we see some more raunchy humor and a hilarious head spin referring to "The Exorcist". And this is where things go from bad to worse for Malcolm, and leads to an exorcism scene.

Basically, although the first and second act are amusing and downright funny at parts, it's really just more of the same. It's just a lot of parodying cliches along with other films such as "The Conjuring", "The Possession", "Sinister", "Paranormal Activity", and the "Evil Dead" reboot. There's also an abundance of racist jokes that are stereotypical, and just aren't that funny. The movie almost becomes a mockery of itself for the third act.

At about 50 minutes into the film, I knew that I liked the previous movie more. Although I was laughing here and there, I wasn't laughing as hard as I had in the first film. And I wasn't enjoying myself as much. I even found myself getting bored and checking my cell phone, increasingly losing interest in the film as it neared its end.

This movie just seems so recklessly put together and sloppy. A lot of scenes drag on far too long and rely on ad libbed babbling to be funny, and it's just senseless and a waste of time. There's usually a lot of deleted and altered scenes in spoof films like this, so I'm sure there's a lot of stuff that didn't make it into the movie. But it makes me wonder if they really couldn't have used some of that footage instead of relying on so much randomness. What a waste.

Not even bringing back Cedric the Entertainer and adding Gabriel Iglesias is enough to save this flick, which is a shame. I was one of the few people who backed the previous film up, and argued its humor. But there's nothing to defend on this one. I am completely let down. I can only hope that if there's a third film, that it rebounds with a big win. Otherwise, this series is about as useless as the "Paranormal Activity" films. I've seen a lot worse, but I expected a lot better.

Mummy Cop (Antonio Piluso) has to bring Lisa to justice but must also face his superiors such as The Mayor (James Royale), The Chief (Phil Calabro) and District Attorney Dracula (Seth Linehan). With a little help from Franken Fed (Erik Searle) he will make sure justice gets served. Get ready for murder, mystery, mayhem, MUMMY COP!"

I found out about "Mummy Cop" through Twitter and I'm already overly enthused. This is definitely the type of thing I'd watch.

It's spoofing the classic movies while giving a modern take and twist. This is definitely a show you make popcorn for and prepare to laugh. You have to love shows and movies that pay homage to the classics. That's what keeps the classics alive and adds to their immortality. Showing how they still, in this day and age, influence work being done is proof that the classics will forever live on.

"Mummy Cop" is a creative idea as a whole and that works for me. I can't wait to watch it. Independent films/shows are things that are done out of pure love for the genre. So you have to have respect for those that can get it right.

Who doesn't like seeing their favorite classic monsters whenever they can? Especially when it's done in some new light, with new perspective whilst also staying true to it's original core.

STORY: Marlon Wayans gives the horror-spoof genre a go on his own in this film,without his brothers Sean and Keenan Ivory Wayans. In this film, like all the other Wayans films, it's laced with jokes with the butt end being racial or potty humor. This film is shot in POV mode with a camcorder, just like in the Paranormal Activity movies. Malcolm (Marlon Wayans) lives on his own in with his dog and maid, Rosa (Marlene Forte) and he decides it'd be a good idea for his girlfriend Kisha (Essence Atkins) to move in with him. Upon her arrival, Malcolm starts to immediately wonder if his friends were right in telling him not to go ahead with the move. Most importantly, he's not getting laid and that sets him off.

Kisha mentions she's been hearing noises and at first Malcolm doesn't believe her, but he becomes convinced. They call upon a Psychic for advisement on what is haunting their house. Chip the Psychic (Nick Swardson) comes to their aid and is more caught up in his crush on Malcolm than the haunting.

Things get even worse when Kisha becomes possessed, and Malcolm calls upon "The Ghost Guys", a team of wannabe ghost hunters and a Priest named Father Williams (Cedric the Entertainer). As they all try and help, they none seem to able to do anything effective.They're in over their heads.

HUMOR/LAUGHS: This movie is laugh out loud funny. The whole theater was in hysterics! This movie didn't let up with the humor and it was pretty funny the whole way through. Cedric the Entertainer was a show stealer as Father Williams, his scenes were cracking me up. He was a good addition to the cast.



SPECIAL FX/STUNTS: The effects in this movie were cheap gag jokes that you could tell didn't cost a lot, but that makes it funnier. The point is to see how they react to the bizarre events going on, that's where the real funny stuff is. There was a lot of cgi used in this movie for some of the gags and other scarier elements of this film but nothing fancy.



OVERALL: If you go into the theater expecting a Christopher Nolan or Francis Coppola film, and judging it on the terms of being a "good movie" than go see something else. The people making this movie knew exactly what they were doing, going of an over-the-top funny movie full of raunchy humor and sterotyping. They aren't concerned with winning an Oscar. Judging this movie on a fair grounds, being that it's a movie meant to entertain you and make you laugh, it's a total blast. I can't wait for it to come out on Blu-ray.
