The Stuff (1985)

Synopsis taken from IMDb
Weird yummy goo erupts from the earth and is discovered by a couple of miners. They taste it and decide to market it because it tastes so good. The American public literally eats up the new desert sensation now known as The Stuff but, unfortunately, it takes over the brains of those who eat it, turning them into zombie-like creatures. It's up to ex-FBI agent David Rutherford and a kid named Jason to stop the spread of the mind-devouring dessert.

The Stuff, or as I like to call it possessed fluffernutter, is plain and simply about the crap we put in our bodies and what it does to us.

In the beginning of the movie a young boy named Jason opens his fridge for a late night snack and sees The Stuff oozing about, moving on its own on the fridge's top shelf. He goes to show his dad and by the time they get back to the fridge The Stuff is neatly back in it's container making young Jason look like a liar. Everyone is addicted to The Stuff.

The movies acting was laughable, but you gotta love it. It's pure 80's awesomeness. It's funny at parts due to some humor and mostly due to the bad effects in the movie. I enjoyed watching this movie, it wasn't horrible and definitely tolerable.

The Stuff rebels and starts attacking and consuming everyone in sight. And the hole time I thought, "hadn't I seen this before in The Blob?" and the answer is yes. Only The Blob was definitely better. The Blob goes down as a classic in my book and this movie would be considered a cult classic.

There wasn't really any gore in this movie which was cool how they made a horror film that required no gore. It did have bad effects though as I've mentioned earlier. Laughable but absolutely classic stuff.

I liked this movie, I'd watch it again sometime if it crosses my way. Not a good film but not forgettable either.

2 stars for me.

  1. Haha! I love this film!

Michael Moriarty is a terrible actor, but he's really funny as well. The director Larry Cohen made another great film called "Q: The Winged Serpent". You've probably seen it, but if you haven't it's worth a watch!

    Great work!

  2. I actually never saw that one! I'm going to add it now! Thanks for the suggestion!

  3. I agree with your comparison to the Blob. The Blob is the superior film (either the original or the remake), but it shares a lot of similarities with The Stuff.

  4. I can;t believe anyone hasn't suggested the It's alive trilogy.Awesome Larry Cohen movies. He also wrote the second and third of the Maniac cop trilogy ,and scripted the first , and directed the season one episode of masters of horror entitled 'Pick me up'.

  5. I saw It's Alive but I never saw the 2nd and 3rd. I'll get on them asap.

I saw the MOH he did and it was pretty decent.

Still have yet to see Maniac Cop series yet.

  6. WATCH THEM A.S.A.P!!!!The first two maniac cop movies have Bruce Campbell in!!!!what more do you need?

  7. Yeah, I'm sold. I've seen nearly every Bruce Campbell film already. Time to add more. I hear about that series alot too.

  8. Have you seen Mindwarp? The man with the screaming brain(Bruce Campbells directorial debut),crimewave, and he even has a cameo in all of raimis spiderman movies, does the screams of the doctors when they are attacked by doc ock in spiderman 2,and has a cameo in Darkman. He also has a small role in the superhero comedy Sky high,is in the coen bros Hudsucker proxy, and even features in John Carpenters Horrible sequel Escape from L.A.He's also in an amazing slasher movie called Intruder , Waxwork II : lost in time , has a cameo at the beginning of From dusk till dawn II : texas blood money,AND.....a little seen film called The woods , directed by Lucky Mckee,a truly amazing horror film that seems to have been missed by alot of people.

  9. The only one of those I haven't seen is Crimewave and The Woods but now that I know Luck Mckee did it I'll give it a shot.

The Intruder is an awesome slasher film, although he's barely in it. Some seriously brutal kills in that one!

  10. It is an awesome slasher movie.Unfotuntly, its incredibly difficult to get hold of in the U.K.You must check Mindwarp out.Angus Scrimm is in it too.

  11. Ah The Tall Man. Thanks for the suggestions! I'm always open to check out some new horror.
